Revitalize our Downtown
We are just beginning to see what Downtown Urbana can become. Three years ago, Urbana commissioned a Downtown Strategic Plan. Brandon will act on the strategy for a vibrant downtown that is a strong community center.
Redevelop Sunnycrest and Philo Road
Philo Road deserves the same priority and support as downtown. Because of market shifts, Philo Road's role as a regional shopping destination is past. We must create a new vision for Philo Road that fits current trends and become more aggressive fostering tangible redevelopment projects.
Provide Input on Orchard Downs' Redevelopment
Brandon will ensure that our neighborhood's interests are heard as the University redevelops Orchard Downs. The design of green space, new retail and housing should enhance the surrounding residential neighborhood and bring tax revenue to the city and schools.
Support Responsible Growth
Urbana has a large amount of tax-exempt property and a small commercial tax base. Urbana needs retail growth to provide goods and services conveniently and to ensure adequate funding for our schools and city.
As Urbana grows, incentives to businesses must be performance-based to ensure a return on investment. Where possible, projects that receive city funding should serve the public by creating living wage jobs or affordable housing units.
Promote Smart Growth
Urbana must grow smartly and sustainably by discouraging sprawl and unplanned growth. Brandon will lead our further use of proven growth practices:
- Urbana has worked to build new neighborhoods that have the same quality and walk-ability as older residential neighborhoods like West and East Urbana. We must continue this and learn from the Traditional Neighborhood Design ordinances used elsewhere.
- Urbana now employs Design Guidelines between campus and downtown to regulate how buildings fit the neighborhood. Design guidelines can be used in more areas of the city to ensure compatible development.
- Big box stores are a reality Urbana cannot ignore. We must pro-actively develop big box regulations so stores do not hurt residential areas or local businesses. We must encourage quality growth on the edges and redevelopment inside the city.
Preserve and Build Strong Neighborhoods
Brandon supports strong neighborhoods to keep Urbana residents comfortable and safe in their homes. Appropriate zoning and enforcement of codes helps to protect neighborhoods. Brandon will promote use of the Historic Preservation Ordinance and strategies to deter demolitions and ensure that new construction is compatible.
Residents of every neighborhood deserve parks, trees, and sidewalks. Brandon will push for maintenance of existing infrastructure and new neighborhoods with these amenities.
Encourage Balanced Transportation
Balanced transportation means supporting a healthy balance of driving, walking, biking, and public transit. Traffic congestion is increasing countywide, while a decreasing percentage of us are walking, biking, or riding the bus to work and school. Brandon will support bike paths, pedestrian-friendly streets and paths, and attractive public transit.
Advocate for Civil Rights
Brandon will support fair hiring policies that help diversify City Hall and he supports citizen review of the police.
Cherish our Library
Brandon will support funding to furnish our expanded library. Brandon will not support capping our book collection.
Protect our Environment
We must reduce our environmental footprint and protect our open space and water resources. Brandon will support the environment, including expansion of recycling.
